PART I: Portable Micro-XRF Spectrometer with polycapillary optics and collimator changer mounted in a vacuum chamber for laboratory and in situ measurements for archeometric and other applications

The portable spectrometer allows to perform analysis of chemical elements from Na upwards.

The compact vacuum chamber was designed to house the x-ray beam optics and the detector snout. The chamber is attached to the x-ray tube and can be pumped down to the 0.1 mbar level and a Kapton™ window of 7.5 µm thickness allows to locate the investigated spot at about 1mm distance outside of the chamber.

This short distance reduces the absorption of the excitation and fluorescence radiation in air to a minimum.

A polycapillary lens with a spot size from about 20mm upwards or a collimator can be used alternatively for focusing or collimation of the primary beam.

A miniature camera for inspecting the analyzed area and two laser pointers crossing each other to coincide with the focal point of the polycapillary are mounted inside the chamber to define the investigated spot.

PART II: Portable Micro-XRF Spectrometer adapted for the special needs for the study of artworks in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna

Version 2 of the spectrometer was designed taking into account the huge variation in material, size and shape of museum objects.

The spectrometer is equipped with the same components as PART I, except of the changer between capillary and collimator, therefore the design of the detection head, especially the vacuum chamber, is optimized for accessibility to all parts of investigated objects, especially to concave surfaces.
